The land of the midnight sun truly lives up to its name. The intense daylight above the Arctic Circle lasts around the clock, making every Norwegian ‘night’ a joy to behold. In fact, you may have to force yourself to go to bed!

The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon found in latitudes north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun is visible at midnight local time. Brilliant sunshine through the clear Arctic air bathes the shores, fjords, mountains, and bays in fire reds, soft pinks, and golden yellows complemented by the deep, soft greens of pine and hardwood forests. 24-hour daylight provides energy to nature and wildlife along the coast, as well as to the Norwegians themselves, and this is likely to rub off on you as well. So, why not use this newly found energy to experience one of our exciting summer adventures?

TROLLFJORD & GEIRANGERFJORD

Trollfjord is just over one mile long and only 328 feet wide at its mouth on the west side of Raftsundet. It is easy to let your imagination run wild here. It's famous for the Battle of Troll Fjord, which took place here in 1880. The battle was between fishermen in steam-driven fishing boats and fishermen in ‘fembøringer’ (boats with sails and oars for five oarsmen). Huge quantities of fish had swum into the fjord and the fishermen in the larger boats were trapping them in a seine formed from their fishing nets, to the exasperation of the crews on the smaller boats.

Geirangerfjord reaches more than 62 miles from Ålesund to Geiranger. The first stretch is typified by lively small towns and villages. On the fjord’s north bank, Sula (with 7,500 inhabitants) has refused amalgamation with Ålesund and is full of energy and initiative. On the south bank lies what was once the center for seal hunting in the Arctic. Further east along the south bank lie Sykkylven and Ekornes, major furniture industry centers.
