Northern Lights & Whales | Iceland

7 Days / 6 Nights Iceland Combination Trip

Iceland in September - a special month for a special voyage!Get to know the island of fire and ice - aboard and ashore! As the lazy days of summer slowly come to an end, the island landscape transforms and is reborn into the vibrant colors of autumn.  Days become shorter, and the Midnight Suns bids farewell to make room in the sky for a spectacular display of dancing Northern Lights. Many are familiar with the term, Aurora Borealis, but few have experienced this natural phenomenon with their own eyes. By day, we will encounter a wide variety of whale species, especially in Northern Iceland near the Arctic Circle. By night, we will hunt for the magical Northern Lights,  all from the vantage point of the open sea.  This unique itinerary begins with a 3-day cruise along the West Coast and North Shore with distinctive shore excursions and lectures by local experts, followed by a motor-coach trek through the Central Highlands back to our final destination of Reykjavik.

NorthernLightsTour1 day1

Use your leisure time in Reykjavík to uncover the unique charm of the world’s northernmost capital or book one of our pre-programmes to experience Iceland. Your “floating hotel” awaits! The OCEAN DIAMOND docks in Old Reykjavík Harbor in the heart of the city a five minute stroll to the main squares, shopping and dining. Embarkation starts at 6 p.m. before the ship sets course for Snaefellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland at 8 p.m. In the evening, keep your eyes open for your first opportunity to see Northern Lights!

NorthernLightsTour1 day2

At 9 a.m. the OCEAN DIAMOND docks in the small village of Stykkisholmur, a starting point for our explorations of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Snaefellsnes is a wonderful example of “Iceland en miniature,” because the region features nearly every type of natural scenery available in Iceland. In the evening, OCEAN DIAMOND departs friendly Stykkisholmur for the direction of the remote Westfjords. Dark clear sky skies away from city lights offer the best opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

NorthernLightsTour1 day3

Today‘s destination is the idyllic town of Isafjördur, honorary capital of the Westfjords region. This secluded peninsula is connected to the mainland by only a narrow strip of land and includes areas where cars have never been. The secluded landscape provides jaw-dropping views of dramatic fjords carved by ancient glaciers, sheer table mountains plunging into the ocean and untouched vegetation. Enjoy the beauty of true silence and the tranquillity of nature while sea fishing or visiting Vigur island, a home for thousands of birds. The only wind mill in Iceland is located in Vigur (optional excursion). For the early evening our Expedition Team has prepared an interesting lecture on the Northern Lights phenomenon.

NorthernLightsTour1 day4

At noon we arrive in the fjord village of Akureyri, recently named by Lonely Planet as the best place to visit in Europe. Take time to reminisce over the previous days before you bid farewell to the OCEAN DIAMOND and begin the land portion of your journey. Ashore we focus on the otherworldly sites surrounding Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve. We’ll encounter still-warm lava fields, craters, steaming landscapes, frozen lava flows and fissures. Dinner and overnight in the Akureyri region.

NorthernLightsTour1 day5

After breakfast at the hotel our land voyage treks along the Kjölur highlands route heading south. We visit geysers as well as the multi-tiered „Golden Falls“ of Gullfoss. Dinner and overnight in South Iceland.

NorthernLightsTour1 day6

En-route to Reykjavík we visit the famed Blue Lagoon spa, for a relaxing soak in warm, thermal waters. The day ends with a city tour of Reykjavík. Overnight in Reykjavík.
