Arrive in Iceland at Keflavik International Airport.  Pick up your rental car at the airport and head to Reykjavík (via road nr. 41), Iceland‘s capital where you stay at 101 hotel in a deluxe room. http://101hotel.is/  If time allows you can take in the sights at Reykjanes peninsula on your way to town, including its Tip, Reykjanestá, Gunnuhver hot spring, the famous Blue Lagoon http://www.bluelagoon.com/  and Krýsuvík hot spring area (via roads nr. 44, 425, 426, 427 and 42 (partly gravel).

Drive the Golden Circle and visit Þingvellir National Park, remarkable for its geology and history; Icleand‘s old parliament place where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimetres per year (via road nr. 36 from Reykjavik through Mosfellsbaer).  Stop at Geysir hot spring area to see Strokkur hot spring erupt and continue to Gullfoss waterfall (after Thingvellir you take roads nr. 365, 37 and 35.  After that you can stop at the Secret Lagoon http://www.secretlagoon.is/ at Flúðir village for a swim in Iceland‘s oldest swimming pool (via road nr. 30).  Make your way to Rangá hotel, located on the ring road nr. 1 between Hella and Hvolsvollur, where you stay overnight in a deluxe room.

Continue your journey along the ring road nr. 1.  Today you will be travelling with Europe‘s largest Glacier, Vatnajökull, on your left side and if the weather is favorable you can just imagine the view!  Stop at Jökulsárlón Glacier lagoon and see the icebergs floating around.  You can even take a boat trip on the lagoon if you like. http://jokulsarlon.is/   Tonight you will stay at, Silfurberg – a small boutique country hotel, located in Breiðdalur valley.

Drive on road nr. 1 to the Lake Mývatn area through the town of Egilsstaðir.  We recommend that after you cross Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river you take road 862 to visit Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.  Once you get to Reykjahlíð by Lake Mývatn, take road 848 to get to Laxá hotel where you will stay for the next 2 nights in a standard room.

Today you have a full day to explore the Lake Mývatn area including Skútustaðir craters, Dimmuborgir rock formations, Námaskarð geothermal field, Mt. Krafla and a crater named Víti (e.Hell).  If you like you can end the day relaxing at the Mývatn nature baths. http://www.myvatnnaturebaths.is/

On this day you drive from the Mývatn area to the town of Sauðárkrókur located in Skagafjörður bay.  Stop at The Waterfall of the Gods, Goðafoss, between Lake Mývatn and Akureyri.  You should stay on road nr. 1 until you have left Akureyri.  Then you can choose from two options.  The first one is shorter and includes continuing on road nr. 1 through the mountains until you reach the crossroads at Varmahlíð.  Then you would take road nr. 75 to Sauðárkrókur village.  The other options involves driving north along the Tröllaskagi coastline, through the villages of Dalvík, Ólafsfjörður, Siglufjörður and Hofsós where one of Icland’s most attractive swimming pool is located, via roads nr. 82, 76 and 75.  Stay overnight at Tindastóll hotel in a superior room.

Head back to the capital and complete the circle.  Stay on nr. 1.  There are several places of interest along the way including Glaumbær turf farm museum, Borgarvirki fortress, Hvammstangi village and seal spotting area and Grábrók crater.  Once you approach the Borgarfjörður area you have the option of driving off the main road and make your way to Húsafell (via roads nr. 50 and 518).  This option would open up for visiting Deildartunguhver hot spring, Hraunfossar waterfalls and taking a guide tour into the man-made ice tunnel at Langjökull glacier.  http://intotheglacier.is/ Stay at 101 hotel in a deluxe room.
